Astarta cuts natural gas consumption in sugar production segment by 15% over 10 years
KYIV. Feb 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Agro-industrial holding Astarta, the largest sugar producer in the country, has reduced natural gas consumption in the sugar production segment by 15% over 10 years, the group’s Facebook page reports.
“Only in sugar production, over the past 10 years, we have reduced natural gas consumption by 15%. We are actively involved in projects in the bioenergy industry. In 2014, we built a biogas complex, which made it possible to partially replace natural gas at our sugar and soy processing plants. The biogas complex itself uses sugar beet pulp as the main raw material,” Astarta quotes its head of the department for investor relations and sustainable development, Pavlo Popov.
In addition, the holding is implementing projects to decarbonize production through the transition from traditional to renewable farming, which involves the use of reduced tillage technologies and more frequent use of cover crops.
“Ukrainian agriculture has great potential in the field of decarbonization and can become a fairly powerful solution for decarbonization not only for Ukraine, but for the entire European continent, we are talking about almost 42 million hectares of arable land. This can be done through the transition from traditional farming to renewable, which involves the use of reduced tillage, the use of cover crops,” Popov said.
According to him, Astarta used reduced tillage technologies on more than 100,000 hectares in 2022.
Popov stressed that the holding has its own IT company AgriChain, which is engaged in the digitalization of agricultural production, as well as the introduction of elements of precision farming for agribusiness, such as differentiated application of fertilizers, plant protection products and seeds.
