Armenian PM says does not intend to declare lockdown due to COVID-19

YEREVAN. Oct 28 (Interfax) – The epidemiological situation is extremely tense in Armenia due to COVID-19, but the authorities do not intend to introduce a lockdown, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a government meeting on Thursday.

"We should not declare a lockdown. The possibility of tightening the mask mandate is being discussed now. It is not ruled out that a mandatory requirement to wear protective masks in outdoor spaces may be introduced. The situation is extremely tense," Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan also instructed the Health Ministry to expedite the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the country.

Armenia has seen a rise in COVID-19 morbidity rates over the past few days, reporting 2,000 new coronavirus cases and 35-50 such fatalities on average per day.

To date, a little over 677,000 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Armenia, which has a population of around three million.

One-week school holidays, which were due to end on November 1, have been extended by a week until November 7.
