Antigovernment protests staged in center of Moldovan capital

CHISINAU. Feb 28 (Interfax) – Supporters of the For Moldova movement rallied in central Chisinau on Tuesday to protest the policy of Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the government.

The column was led by Marina Tauber and Reghina Apostolova, members of the Moldovan parliament representing the Shor Party. The demonstration was accompanied by dozens of policemen. Protesters are mainly elderly people from the countryside carrying Moldovan national flags and chanting antigovernment mottos.

The protest was announced in the wake of the earlier articulated demand that the Moldovan authorities pay people for all utility bills for the past three winter months.

“By her attempts to ban the protest, [President] Maia Sandu once again proved that what the country is seeing today is no democracy but a dictatorship,” Tauber said, marching in the procession.

Police said earlier on Tuesday morning that protests were prohibited in central Chisinau due to a visit by an official delegation led by the Greek president.
