Amount of losses in cases sent to court on environmental crimes exceeds UAH 163 mln – SBI
KYIV. Aug 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Since the beginning of 2021, the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) has investigated 367 criminal proceedings on environmental crimes, 168 persons have been notified of suspicion, 67 proceedings have been submitted to court, the press service of SBI has reported.
"The amount of established losses in criminal proceedings already sent to the court amounted to more than UAH 163 million, including UAH 90 million due to illegal logging. And, I am sure that this is only a part of the violations, which clearly indicates the catastrophic scale of criminal activity in this area," said acting Director of the SBI Oleksiy Sukhachov.
He noted that most of these crimes occur due to negligence and with the assistance of forestry employees.
Most of the facts of illegal deforestation were found in Kharkiv (47), Zakarpattia (34) and Chernivtsi (26) regions, the largest losses were in Kyiv (UAH 51 million), Kharkiv (UAH 19.5 million) and Volyn (over UAH 17.2 million) regions.
It is noted that the amount of losses caused to the state is still being established.
