Almost 90 cases of harassment of activists have occurred in Ukraine since year start – ZMINA center
KYIV. Oct 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Since the beginning of 2021 (January-September), there have been 88 cases of persecution of public activists and human rights defenders in Ukraine, according to the monitoring report of the Human Rights Center ZMINA.
"Such incidents took place in 16 Ukrainian regions, but the largest number was recorded in the city of Kyiv (37 cases) and in Odesa region (10 cases). At the same time, pressure on activists is primarily associated with the destruction or damage of their property (22 incidents), threats (20 cases) and physical attack on them (16)," researcher of the ZMINA center Anastasia Moskvicheva said at the presentation of the monitoring report on Thursday.
In addition, ten cases showed signs of planned discrediting, six of illegal judiciary prosecution, and four of obstruction of the activities of a public organization. According to the monitoring, three incidents also related to unlawful detention or search.
At the same time, Moskvicheva drew attention to the fact that in the third quarter of 2021 there were 35 cases of persecution of activists, 15 of which occurred in Kyiv. At the same time, 10 incidents out of the total concerned intimidation and threats, and eight ones concerned physical attacks.
According to her, the most risky activity of activists is still protecting the rights of LGBTIQ chairmen, combating corruption and illegal construction, as well as activities related to the protection of the environment, the rights of women, journalists, veterans and patients.
Researchers of ZMINA stated in their report that over the nine months of last year, 77 incidents were recorded related to pressure on activists, which gives reason to talk about the deterioration of the situation.
