Almost 450 Ukrainians granted Belarusian citizenship – Lukashenko's decree

KYIV. Dec 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, whom the EU and the United States do not recognize as legally elected, signed a decree granting citizenship to 448 Ukrainians, the presidential press service reported on Tuesday.

"These are the people who applied on this issue after relevant instructions were issued by the president during the Big Talk meeting with public figures, the media and experts," the message says.

"The president earlier signed a similar decree granting Belarusian citizenship to 248 citizens of Ukraine. In addition, in accordance with the head of state’s instructions, the interior ministry’s citizenship and migration departments made decisions on 485 citizenship applications from Ukrainian citizens on the registration basis," the press service said.

In total, some 1,200 people from Ukraine have become Belarusian citizens since Big Talk, it said.

"Currently, the president’s citizenship commission does not have unprocessed citizenship applications. Further work of implementing the head of state’s instructions will be continued," it said.
