Active epidemiological process on COVID-19 continues in Sumy, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernihiv regions – chief sanitary doctor

KYIV. Nov 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The active epidemic process on COVID-19 continues in Sumy, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Chernihiv regions, chief sanitary doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin has said.

"Today we have the highest rates of testing showing positive results in Sumy, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Chernihiv regions. These are actually those regions where the epidemic process is quite actively continuing," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Kuzin explained that if the indicators for the positiveness of testing are more than 20%, then there are grounds for introducing a "red" zone in the region.

"We see a definite connection between the positiveness of the tests and the level of hospitalization: first, the positiveness increases, that is, the infection begins to circulate actively, and then hospitalization increases after a few weeks," he said.

The chief sanitary doctor also stressed that to eliminate the possibility of manipulating this indicator, the Ministry of Health also uses an indicator on the coverage of testing – the average number of tests that a laboratory or region must perform at the level of all its merged territorial communities.

"These characteristics are compared so that there is no fraud with artificial underestimation or overestimation. If the infection circulates, the indicator will definitely exceed 20%, the beds will be loaded," Kuzin explained.
